The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reported that 20 percent of bats in the world are at serious risk of disappearing, according to its "red list" of endangered species, so called for greater efforts to protect

On the occasion of Halloween party where the mammals are nocturnal, hairy actors, IUCN recalled in a statement that not only "a mysterious and creepy creatures," but also some "very important" to nature.

"Bats are disappearing at an alarming rate, due in part to ignorance and unawareness of the benefits they provide," said co-chair of the specialist group of IUCN on bats, Paul A. Racey.

These animals, which are the second group of mammals with over a thousand species, 250 kinds of bats, they perform an important ecological work in the process of pollination, seed dispersal and reduction of insect pests.

For example, in Mexico, the tail bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) feed on insect pests nesting in cotton and snuff, reducing insect populations and the amount of pesticides.

"We must build a strategy for the conservation of bats and educate new generations about its importance in the ecosystem," said Racey.

Bats can take shelter in the darkness of the caves, holes in trees or foliage of almost every type of habitat, provided that two things are essential to them: a space in which to store food and a suit in which to sleep hanging upside down.

Therefore, it is usually found in dense forests, where little light penetrates and where they can find many branches in which to rest during the day hanging there, although the IUCN noted that the increasing global deforestation is destroying the natural habitat of these animals .

The president of the Species Survival Commission of IUCN, Simon Stuart, said that bats are one of the most despised species of mammals and it is urgent to preserve the forests that provide habitat and neutralize the remaining threats to its survival.
