From David's Desk

Well here it is time to do another creative job of writing and I quickly have several topics to cover.

The first is the pollsters; frankly I don?t much care what they say before or after the ballots are casted. I do find it interesting this year that they can?t seem to get much right other than the day after excuses. Maybe all pollsters are former Falcon football coaches they know what they did wrong after they?ve lost the game. At any rate I don?t really care whether your candidate won, I just hope you went out and voted. If you didn?t go vote then don?t complain about the turnout.

Next subject, Avian Flu and dah it is of potential pandemic proportion. As the guy used to say on Laugh In ?Very Interesting? and it is as more and more behind the scene things are happening. You may think our Infectious Disease Hour that we?ve been doing now for almost two years is crazy, it?s not.

A friend in a local middle school was talking to the school?s nurse that just returned from a ?School Nurse?s Conference? and told my friend I had no idea how serious the potential Avian Flu Pandemic is. This is as she?s printing out a large ?Preparedness? document.

Folks this is not ?Chicken Little? it does involve chickens but it is NO game!!!

We had Sharron on from www.flutrackers.com on Monday?s Infectious Disease Hour a very good show and her little business is used by WHO, the UN, and many more to track outbreaks of infectious diseases around the world.

If you think the Avian Flu is a joke then go to the CDC website, FluTrackers, or even Google Alert and learn for yourself.

As the school nurse said the people speaking at the conference said (as we?ve been saying) the potential pandemic could easily kill millions ? and that?s just in the United States!

HELLO ? wake up folks! So, what can you do about it?

Be prepared, stock up on WATER, food, masks, and a large amount of hand soap.

Learn to wash your hands every time you come and go and PLEASE teach your children how to wash their little hands properly!

At this very moment we can?t prevent it, but we can prepare for it. By-the-way as you are preparing for the potential flu pandemic you are also preparing for man-made (terrorist) or natural disaster or hazard. So, your time and money to be prepared is NOT a waste!

Finally and this is our weakest area personally ? work in and with your neighbors. If a neighbor thinks this is a joke go to the next neighbor and when it turns out not to be a joke be prepared to turn the first neighbor away! Sounds cruel, well some projections by local, state, national and international authorities description of what could possibly happen means literally arming one?s self to protect your family and hold on to the food and water you have, because you are prepared!

If the Avian Flu does breakout, remember you are your best protection ? wash your hands frequently, don?t go out, and continue particularly if you do get the flu or a family member does STAY hydrated!!!

Please don?t take my word for any of the above ? Google Avian Flu and check all this out for yourself!

Thank you Snowy, and Sharon.

"If a neighbor thinks this is a joke go to the next neighbor and when it turns out not to be a joke be prepared to turn the first neighbor away! Sounds cruel ..."

Most folks think that is more cruel that many prepers will spining 360 grades because the neighborhood (yet) thinks - that's only some hysterical "chicken" alarming us - but those neighbours will remember the ones who had stored the goods, and they will make a visit to them when some pandemic starts, to take "their" cut ...

Re: The Radio Sandy Springs Blog

I agree.....trying to prepare your neighbors is so important, but it's also asking for trouble if you are not successful. The same people you talk to in the back yard in summer could be the very people you have to defend against in a pandemic. And in a similarly dreary light....I was talking to a group of friends/neighbors about preparing and particularly about sheltering in place. One guy said "yeah but if I do that I'll lose my job". My reply....which is probably cold sounding but I fear it's also true.....was that so many people WILL go out, and many will get sick and many will also unfortunatly die and leave jobs open in doing so, meaning that even if you lose your job you should still be able to work after the pandemic is over. The goal is to keep yourself and your family alive and then figure out how you can fix the problems that occur if your job isn't waiting for you. At least you will be alive to work through it all.

Hi Cindie

Had not thought of the mercenary aspect of a pandemic flu with high fatalities. Wonder if my visiting the family next time with a clip board in hand would have any effect? Imagine the conversations: "Hey Bill your're not prepping for the pandemic are you? Great! Hummm lets see now.... there's your flat screen tv, the Lexus, the silver, good crystal and you inherited all of Uncle John's stock certificates right? Excellent! Still keeping the boat up at the marina? Wonderful! I'll be praying for you!" ;)

Imagine the job interviews: “Yes, I’m applying for the position of emergency management coordinator for your company. My condolences for the loss of your prior coordinator. No, I do not have masters in engineering or a doctorate degree in Emergency Management. Qualifications? I survived the pandemic due to my planning and preparations and am willing to work.” “You’re hired!”
