Two kindergartens closed after students found infected with disease

Two kindergartens in Yala have been closed after their students were found infected with hand, foot and mouth disease, Dr Peerapong Paowanasutipaisit, director of Yala Hospital said Thursday.

The doctor said the hospital from May 23 until today has treated 28 students from the kindergartens in the province's Yala municipality and found they were infected with the disease.

No Fatality Caused By Hand, Foot, And Mouth Disease In Thailand

BANGKOK, July 5 (Bernama) -- Thailand's Health Ministry says the spread of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) in the country has not caused fatality after two daycare centres in eastern Trad province have been temporarily closed due to latest outbreak.

At least 20 children at two daycare centres in Trad are found to have contracted HFMD, Thai News Agency (TNA) reported.

Dr. Pornthep Siriwanarangsan, Director of the Department Disease Control of Thailand, said on Thursday that although HFMD-related deaths had been reported in some countries there had been no fatalities in Thailand.

The Ministry has reported over 10,800 cases of HFMD patients between January and July this year, mostly in the North.

Dr. Pornthep said the HFMD virus in Thailand would unlikely cause death and the ministry was stepping up surveillance, control and treatment of HFMD across the country...

Phitsanulok sets up HFMD "war room" after more cases detected

Dr Boonteum Tansurat, the provincial public health chief, said the province has a total of 12 kindergartens and the spread of the virus is not being viewed as serious as no child has died from the disease.

However, he noted that more children have become infected with HFMD. "There are now altogether 240 patients in the province and in July alone, 99 patients cases been detected. Most of the patients were found in Muang, Wang Thong and Phrom Phiram districts," the doctor said.

...Meanwhile, in Bangkok, Dr Wongwat Lewlak, head of the Bangkok municipality's Communicable Diseases Control Division in the Department of Health said the total number of HFMD in the capital between January 1 and July 27 stood at 3,524 cases.

An additional 179 cases were reported Friday. The number is rather high, Dr Wongwat said, but added that he believed the spread of the disease would drop in a few weeks. City Hall is now implementing prevention measures continuously...

Lampang ranks 7th in number of hand- foot-mouth patients

LAMPANG, 28 July 2012 ? The Provincial Health Office of Lampang has made public the most recent situation of the hand, foot and mouth syndrome in the province.

The data, collected during January-July 25, 2012, showed that a total of 246 people were afflicted with the hand, foot and mouth syndrome, a rate of 32.47 patients per 100,000 citizens.

As for the situation in eight northern provinces, it was found that Lampang ranks seventh in terms of number of patients. Nationwide, there have been 16,860 people afflicted with the hand-foot-mouth disease.

Experts try to stamp out confusion over HFMD

BANGKOK, 27 July 2012 - Virus experts have discussed guidelines to inform people of encephalitis and hand, foot and mouth (HFMD) disease caused by Enterovirus71 or (EV71) following confusion among the public about the two illnesses.

The experts met on Friday to seek ways to make the public understand that EV71 was a group of virus that may cause different diseases, including HFMD and encephalitis, depending on the health condition of a person. Similar to flu virus, if the infected person was healthy, he would not have symptoms of flu. But if he was unhealthy, the weak systems in his body would be damaged, the experts said.
