The Latest Information on H1N1 Virus in Texas
GRAYSON COUNTY, TX---The now FDA approved H1N1 vaccine is set to be available sometime in mid-October. Michelle Gillespie reports that a new website created by the Texas Health Department is trying to get the word out to keep Texans updated--to the minute, on virus information.
To date, 42 texans have died from the H1N1 virus and in Oklahoma, one person has died from the virus.
Now the Texas Health Department is being pro-active and launching a new website to let people know the latest about H1N1. Things like: where to get the vaccine and who can get it. This is all in an effort to avoid any misinformation surrounding the virus.
"There's been an overwhelming response, people coming in, just yesterday after lunch there were 23 people awiting to get the seasonal flu vaccine," says Grayson County Health Inspector Amanda Ortez.
She says with all the hype about influenza and the H1N1 virus these past few months, people are literally lining up to get the seasonal flu vaccine and anticipating the H1N1 vaccine that will be available in mid-Ocotber.
"Anytime something new comes about, it is scary for a lot of individuals. The CDC wants to keep up to date, tracking the virus to make sure it doesn't mutate, to make sure the vaccine is efficient--which clinical trials are on-going for that and its going to protect and give immunity within the U.S.," says Ortez.
And now that Texas has one of the highest H1N1 related death rates in the country, the state's Health Department wants to give Texans the latest H1N1 flu information with one centralized place to find it.
"I've heard a lot of people talking about it, and you have to go to the source to be able to find out exactly what's going on with it," says Grayson County resident Buffy Ortez.
That source--the new website will give updates on the spread of the flu to different counties in Texas, as well information on eligiblity for the vaccine.
"You need to get a shot, or you'll be in trouble, I'm concerned about how long it will take," says one Grayson County resident.
And the website will tell you that too: when to expect it at a doctor's office or clinic near you.
"I think it's a good idea, keeping people informed," says one resident.
