SAN ANTONIO - The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) has issued an urgent alert to horse owners following an outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EHV-1) in the state.

The virus was reported by veterinarians after the World Championship Barrel Racing Finals, held in the Waco area from Nov. 5-9.

Commissioner Sid Miller, an avid horseman, emphasized the critical need for vigilance among those who attended or were near the event, as well as those who have recently participated in large equine gatherings in the Waco region.​..

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The Equine Disease Communication Center has just confirmed a case of EHV-1 virus in Randall County.

This case is associated with the EHM outbreak that originated at the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association World Finals and Elite Barrel Race event in Waco. This outbreak was reported by Texas veterinarians Nov. 5.​..

The Equine Disease Communication Center is monitoring an outbreak of equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM), the neurologic form of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1), that originated at the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) World Finals and Elite Barrel Race event in Waco, Texas, on Nov. 5-9.

As of November 26, the EDCC has confirmed 37 EHV-1 cases associated with the event. The cases are located in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Colorado, New Mexico, Washington, Arizona, and South Dakota.
