[FONT=verdana,arial]Tacloban City (August 9) -- The Regional Avian Influenza Task Force in Eastern Visayas continues to be vigilant in its desire to keep the Region and the Country as a whole Avian Flu free.[/FONT]

[FONT=verdana,arial]Department of Agriculture Regional Executive Director Leo Caneda said that it is for this reason that together with the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics, the Regional Avian Influenza Task Force will hold a meeting on August 11, 2006 at the Ritz Tower de Leyte.[/FONT]

[FONT=verdana,arial]Director Caneda said that among the agenda of the said meeting will be the Status of the Avian Population Survey which has been conducted in the different provinces of Region 8 and the presentation of proposed City/Municipal preparedness and response planning workshop.[/FONT]

[FONT=verdana,arial]Also included are the presentation of the proposed consultative meetings with City/Provincial Veterinarians on the Status of Animal Health Programs, Avian Influenza Updates and the Rules and Regulations on the Proper Handling of Wildlife.[/FONT]

[FONT=verdana,arial]The country's defense system against bird flu is embodied in a plan called the Avian Influenza Protection (AIPP). This was developed starting two years ago when the outbreaks were recorded in many Asian countries. It is continuously updated upon consultations with various government agencies, private sector groups, poultry veterinarians and health experts which form part of the coalition of government agencies against avian flu. The AIPP is organized according to four scenarios: Stage I Keeping the Philippines Bird-Flu Free; Stage II Control and Eradication of AI Infection in Domestic Poultry; Stage III Transmission from Domestic Poultry in Humans; Stage IV Transmission from Human to Human (Pandemic).[/FONT]

[FONT=verdana,arial]Bird flu or avian influenza is an infectious disease in chickens, ducks & other birds ranging from mild to severe form of illness. All birds are thought to be susceptible to infection with avian influenza, though some species are more resistant to infection than others.
