Three die of water-borne disease

VEDASANDUR (DINDIGUL): Three persons, including two women, are suspected to have died of a water-borne disease at Athupatti near here in the early hours of Thursday.

The deceased were Thamizhsevi, noon-meal worker, Muniammal and Raja Perumal, both farmers, residing at Athupatti village. All the three were neighbours living in a residential colony.

Local people said that Muniammal and Thamizhselvi had been suffering from diarrhoea. They were rushed to the Government Hospital in Dindigul for treatment. Muniammal died on way to hospital and Thamizhselvi also died later. Her relatives brought back the bodies to the village.

Another neighbour, Raja Perumal, who was admitted to the Dindigul GH with similar symptoms, also died in the early hours of Thursday.

A group of local people picketed the Vedasandur-Dindigul National Highway condemning the ?inordinate delay? in sending a medical team to the village. Traffic was disrupted for more than one and a half hours. Later, police, health and revenue officials rushed to the spot and pacified the crowd.

Meanwhile, a team of doctors from Thadikombu Primary Health Centre and Vedasandur GH visited the village and diagnosed the health condition of the people.

Preventive medicines were also distributed to them. The doctors suspected that water contamination could be the reason for the deaths.

Though the villagers claimed that the deceased had cholera, the exact cause would be known only on receipt of results of laboratory tests.

Cholera claims three lives in Tamil Nadu

Theni (TN), May 16 (PTI) An outbreak of cholera has claimed three lives and affected more than 160 people in Uthamapalayam belt in the district, officials said today.

A labourer and a house wife of Pannaipuram village died late last night at Theni Government Medical College Hospital, hospital sources said. One person died on Friday.
Water contamination at two pumping stations of a drinking water scheme for the region was behind the outbreak of cholera, they said quoting a report by health department.
More than 160 people had been admitted to various hospitals, they said, adding over 140 people had been treated for gastroenteritis in Chinamanur area.
The contamination was caused by mixing of sewage water with Periyar River water at Uthamapalayam, the source for the drinking water scheme, Revenue department officials said.
Tests of water samples from the two pumping stations at P C Patti and Cunnur showed contamination.

MADURAI: Four persons have died due to cholera in Theni district, and over 600 people have been treated for diarrhoea in the last six days, causing fear in Uthamapalayam and surrounding regions of the district.

"Four deaths were confirmed cases of cholera. Seven samples were tested in the last few days and four tested positive for cholera," Dr S Chelladurai, deputy director of health services, Theni, told TOI. As many as 234 patients in Theni and 186 in Uthamapalayam and its neighbouring villages had been treated for diarrhoea-related diseases.

The outbreak of diarrhoea was also reported from Chinnamanur, Bodi and other areas of Theni district. More than 100 persons were admitted to the government medical college in Theni and government hospitals, PHCs and private hospitals.

Notes: There is no chlorination found in drinking water. Damage in the main water line may contaminated drinking water. 3 rectal swabs were taken and sent to IVC&Z, Hosur on 1.6.2010 and 2 found ve for V.Cholera. Infected houses were disinfected. OHTs were cleaned and chlorinated. Chlorination were done in the already stored water in the Houses. Door to door investigation and health education done. People advised to use boiled water. Instructed to keep the house and surroundings clean. Water supply through pipe line disconnected. Temporary water supplied through lorry after chlorination. Temporary tap connection established nearby OHT. Medical camp organised in affected site and all patients were treated. All contacts were prophylactically treated. Local body is requested to monitor the pipe line and to chlorinate water daily. Investigation Open Poor sanitation with open air defaecation habits, pit trapping practice, and damage in the main water pipe line may contaminated the water.

CHENNAI: Fifteen days ago, Kamala was one of the first women at Dr Ambedkar Nagar, Aynavaram, to be diagnosed with cholera. Since then, 25 more cases of cholera have been reported from three streets in Aynavaram alone. These reports came in, despite Mayor M.Subramanian's denials of any recent chlolera outbreak.

The official records reflect only cases undergoing treatment at the Communicable Diseases Hospital (CDH), Tondiarpet. Most patients from this area are admitted at nearby private hospitals.

"There are still at least 15 persons on the streets who are under the cholera attack and undergoing treatment at nearby private hospitals," said Dharamaraju, a resident.

The residents complained that treatment at private hospitals costs up to Rs 10,000. Sundarajan, a resident, paid Rs 3, 000 for the treatment of his 14yearold son who is still recovering from cholera while some others had to pay up to Rs 5, 000.

Residents blame the overflowing drainage pipes as the cause for the disease and discoloured drinking water. Yashoda, a resident from the third street, said, the coporation officials distributed tablets to only a few of the houses in the area during an afternoon, while many people were not even aware that the tablets were being distributed.

The drainage near Suresh Babu's house on the third street is overflowing. Suresh said the water keeps rising and during nights they are more helpless especially when it rained. This forces the women to cook outside because the sewage water enters their homes.
