TIRUCHY: Cadres of AIADMK, MDMK, Dalit Panthers of India, Moovendar Munnetra Kazhagam and Indian Union Muslim League (TN) staged a protest here on Saturday, against the ruling party?s alleged failure to check the outbreak of chikungunya.

As part of a state wide agitation, about 500 volunteers of the parties condemned the state government alleging that they were lethargic in checking the spread of the disease.

The agitation led by AIADMK?s former minister V Sathiyamurthy alleged that the DMK government owes moral responsibility for the spreading of the disease.

MDMK Presidium Chairman L Ganesan called upon the cadres of opposition parties to give a suitable verdict to the DMK in the forthcoming local body polls.

He said that the cadres should not be surprised to face parliament as well as assembly elections in the near future.

AIADMK district secretary K C Paramasivam, MDMK district secretary A Malarmannan, Perarivalan of DPI and others participated.

In a statement, she said Karunanidhi, who was ready to attend any number of felicitation functions, had no time to take steps to contain the disease.

She claimed that it was only after her party staged protests against the government's "lethargic" attitude in taking steps on controlling the disease, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi convened a district collectors conference.

The "hidden agenda" of the conference was to take steps for controlling the disease, she charged, adding the collectors were being made "scapegoats for the DMK government's inefficiency."

She said she had gathered information about the deaths from media reports and from her personal contacts in the districts.

This information would not be available in government hospitals as the doctors had not mentioned about the disease in the registers, she alleged. (Our Correspondent)

Jaya releases list of chikungunya victims

http://newstodaynet.com/20sep/ld2.htm

NT Bureau
Chennai, Sept 20:

AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa today said the DMK government had failed in protecting people from the viral disease chikungunya.

She also released the list of 232 victims who are said to have died in the State due to the affliction.

In an apparent reply to State Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy (who had dared her to come up with a list of victims), Jayalalithaa, in a statement, said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was interested in participating in functions being arranged to felicitate him rather than showing concern towards safe-guarding people.

'Both the Chief Minister and the Health Minister have told the Assembly that no loss of life had occurred in the State due to chikungunya.

They did not take any measures to stop the disease from spreading all over.'

Jayalalithaa said it was the family members of Karunanidhi, retired and disgraced officials, who are running the government in the State and they were acting according to their personal bias and wish.

Stating that she condemned the government by conducting a protest along with the alliance partners, Jayalalithaa said after that Karunanidhi convened the district Collectors meet in which the chikungunya issue was discussed as a 'hidden agenda'.

Jayalalithaa also said that the deaths which occured due to the disease were registered in the government hospitals across Tamilnadu as due to fever and not as chikungunya since the government had announced that there were no such (chickungunya) deaths in the State.

CUDDALORE:

Medical teams have been deployed in rural areas of the district to keep a tab on the spread of chikungunya and to render speedy health care, according to District Collector Gagandeep Singh Bedi.

In a statement issued here, Mr. Bedi noted that 33 cases of chikungunya were reported in the district so far and were cured owing to timely medical intervention.

Services of doctors, nurses and health workers in Primary Health Centres and Sub-Health Centres would be well utilised, he said.

Medical teams comprising a doctor and a nurse would camp in affected villages to give appropriate treatment.

CHENNAI :

About 80 per cent of families in north Chennai have, at least, one member affected by chikungunya.
This was one of the findings of a study, conducted by Karunalaya, a voluntary organisation involved in an awareness programme along with the Chennai Corporation for the past two weeks.

The organisation conducted a week-long door-to-door awareness campaign till Monday, covering 1,298 houses at VOC Nagar in Tondiarpet to educate the public on the causes of the disease, including an unclean environment.

The study revealed that water containers in about 60 per cent of the houses were breeding sites of mosquito larvae.

Though half of the population in the areas knew about the importance of keeping water containers clean, they did not practise it, it said.

Ornamental fish tank, unattended utensils and stone grinders were found to be other breeding spots of mosquito larvae in the households.

Karunalaya also assisted the Corporation in conducting health camps, which covered about 500 people in areas of the Pulianthope zone in the second week of September.
The organisation trained 165 women self-help group leaders on Saturday in prevention and treatment of the disease.

The women were motivated to educate the people in their areas, a release from the organisation said.

Based on the findings, the organisation would conduct an awareness rally to educate the public on breeding places of mosquito larvae.
