The death toll from influenza A(H1N1) in Taiwan rose to seven yesterday following the death a 49-year-old male resident of Taipei County who been admitted to a local hospital more than a week earlier after being diagnosed with pneumonia.
According to a Taipei County Public Health Bureau statement, the man, who lived in Jhonghe, was the first resident of the county to die of the swine flu. The man had suffered from high blood pressure and arrhythmia before coming down with flu symptoms, including a fever, coughing and a sore throat Aug. 17, the statement said.
Several days later, he was admitted by a local hospital after he was diagnosed with pneumonia. He failed to respond to treatment, however, and was put on a respirator Aug. 26. He died yesterday at noon.
The Taipei County health bureau said that none of his three family members had developed symptoms of the H1N1 flu strain.
As of yesterday, the county has reported 24 A(H1N1) cases, six of which are being hospitalized, the statement added.
Meanwhile, concerns that an Indonesian badminton player in Taipei for the Deaflympics had been infected with swine flu triggered a media frenzy earlier in the day. But a rapid screening test on the athlete, who had a temperature of 37.70 , came up negative.
Sixteen more patients with the A(H1N1) flu virus were reported hospitalized as of yesterday, bringing the total number who have been hospitalized by the H1N1 flu in Taiwan to 128, the Centers for Disease Control reported.
