Taipei, Nov. 24 (CNA) Influenza-related complications have claimed the lives of 25 patients in Taiwan since July, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday, urging people to get vaccinated against flu as temperatures are expected to drop this week.

Taiwan has recorded 145 cases of patients with severe flu complications and 25 flu-related deaths, the CDC said, citing data valid for the period July to Nov. 23.

The flu season in Taiwan usually lasts from October to March.

Taiwan records 28th flu-related death since July

Taipei, Dec. 22 (CNA) A 69-year-old man from central Taiwan died of flu-related complications earlier this month, the 28th flu-associated death recorded in the country since July, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday.

The victim, who was a long-time smoker with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, was hospitalized Dec. 1 after being diagnosed with pneumonia, the CDC said.

He came down with symptoms of shock and respiratory failure Dec. 7 and was admitted to a hospital intensive care unit. The patient died Dec.11, the CDC said.

TAIPEI -- A 22-month-old infant was one of four people who died of flu-related complications in Taiwan last week, becoming the youngest flu victim to die since the flu season began in July, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday.

Authorities confirmed 18 new flu cases with complications and four flu-associated deaths last week, bringing the total number of confirmed flu cases and deaths since July 1 to 196 and 34, respectively.

Taipei, Jan. 26 (CNA) Taiwan has recorded 253 cases of patients with severe flu complications since July 2015, 41 of which have resulted in death, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday.

The number includes the latest 35 severe flu cases, four of which resulted in death, that were reported last week, the CDC said.

Of these 35 cases, 29 were determined to be influenza A (H1N1) infections, five were influenza A (H3N2) infections, and the other one was influenza A of unknown subtype, according to the CDC.

Among the four people who died of flu-related complications last week was a two-year-old girl who had not been vaccinated against the flu, the CDC said.

The girl was at first hospitalized for fever and convulsions, and was later diagnosed with meningoencephalocele and necrotizing encephalitis. She tested positive for H1N1.

Taipei, Feb. 2 (CNA) The Centers for Disease Control said Tuesday that the number of influenza cases has risen quickly in Taiwan, with an additional 58 serious complications from influenza, the highest in a single week this year.

The CDC said the recent continued low temperatures around Taiwan have led to the fast climb in the number of influenza cases in Taiwan.

In addition to the confirmed 58 cases of serious flu complications, there were also two fatalities related to the virus last week -- an 87-year-old man living in central Taiwan, and a 95-year-old woman living in northern Taiwan, both of whom had a history of chronic disease.

Taipei, Feb. 23 (CNA) The number of people infected with influenza that developed into severe complications rose by 320 in Taiwan last week, the highest weekly growth in the past five years, a senior official at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday.

The severe flu cases were reported in the period from Feb. 16-22, CDC Deputy Director-General Chou Jih-haw (周志浩) said. Also, 14 flu-related fatalities were reported in the same period, he added.

The deaths involved nine male and five female patients, aged between 4 and 85, Chou said, noting that 12 of the patients had underlying chronic diseases before being infected with flu.

Since July last year, 1,109 severe flu cases have been reported in Taiwan, and 84 of them have been fatal, the agency said.

Taiwan records 42 flu-related deaths in one-week period

Taipei, March 15 (CNA) Taiwan recorded 240 new cases of severe flu with complications last week, 42 of which resulted in death, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday.

The A H1N1 strain of influenza remains the most prevalent form of the virus, accounting for 193 of the 240 new cases, followed by 28 influenza B cases, the CDC said. The remainder comprised other strains of the virus.

Of the 42 fatalities, 36 were deaths from the H1N1 strain, 4 were from the influenza B strain and 2 were from un-typed influenza A virus infection.

Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞), a doctor with the CDC, said 11 of the fatalities involved patients aged between 36 and 49, and of those 11 patients, only one did not suffer underlying chronic illness.

Since the start of the flu season in July last year, 1,663 severe flu cases have been reported in Taiwan, 163 of which have proved fatal, the CDC said.

Taipei, March 22 (CNA) Taiwan recorded 115 new cases of severe flu with complications last week, 38 of which resulted in deaths, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday.

The influenza A H1N1 strain remains the most prevalent form of the flu virus in Taiwan, accounting for about 80 percent of the 115 new cases, followed by influenza B cases (14 percent), the CDC said.

Over the past week, about 38 cases of flu-associated deaths were reported, CDC Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said, adding that the CDC will look further into the deaths to determine exactly how many of the fatalities were caused by the flu.

Since July last year, 1,778 severe flu cases have been reported in Taiwan, and 245 of them have been fatal, with most of the fatalities hitting people aged over 50, according to the CDC. July is the starting point for the flu season in Taiwan.
