YUNLIN, Taiwan -- Nearly 800 goats infected with goat pox virus (GPV) have been culled at two ranches in Yunlin County's Siluo Township in central-south Taiwan, animal health officials said yesterday.

?The animals were slaughtered after two goats in the Yunlin meat wholesale market were found to have symptoms of GPV on April 9,? said Huang Kuo-ching, deputy director of the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ) under the Council of Agriculture.

None of the infected animals had entered the retail market, Huang said, adding that the two sick goats were spotted by vets during routine health checks...

Sunday, Apr 18, 2010, Page 2 The Council of Agriculture (COA) yesterday said it had culled another 175 goats at two ranches in Chang*hua County in a nation-wide inspection of sheep ranches for cases of infection with the goat pox virus (GPV).

The culling came after nearly 800 goats infected with GPV were culled at two ranches in Yunlin County?s Siluo Township (西螺) on Wednesday. The animals were slaughtered after two goats in the Yunlin meat wholesale market were found to have symptoms of GPV on April 9.

Huang Kuo-ching (黃國青), deputy director of the COA?s Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ), said none of the infected animals had entered the retail market.

Vets had spotted the two sick goats in Yunlin County during routine health checks and staff members of the Yunlin animal health inspection and quarantine bureau immediately traveled to the two problem ranches to examine and test all the animals there, Huang said. A ban was also imposed on the movement of animals at both ranches, he said.

Follow-up tests at the BAPHIQ on samples collected at the ranches confirmed that the goats had contracted GPV, a highly contagious disease afflicting small ruminants that is characterized by fever and ocular and nasal discharges. It also causes pox lesions on the skin and on the mucous membranes of the nostrils, mouth and vulva. GPV cannot infect humans and can be destroyed at high temperatures, Huang said.

To prevent the spread of the virus, all of the animals on the four farms were culled and the farms disinfected, Huang said.

Huang said the bureau had informed the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) of the cases. According to OIE regulations, Taiwan will be removed from the list of sheep and goat pox-affected areas if no new cases are reported in the next three years.

Huang said the bureau would procure medications and vaccines to wipe out the disease as soon as possible. The bureau is also investigating the source of the infection, Huang said.

An outbreak of goat pox virus at goat ranches has yet to subside, with more than 5,000 infected animals being culled since the first case this year was confirmed on April 9, the Council of Agriculture said on Sunday.

A total of 5,055 infected goats from 32 farms in six counties had been slaughtered as of Friday to prevent spread of the virus, the council said.

Affected farms in Yunlin, Changhua, Tainan, Taichung and Taoyuan counties have also been disinfected, council officials said.

Goat pox, a highly contagious disease that is characterized by fever and discharges from the nose and eyes, causes lesions on the skin and the mucous membranes of the nostrils, mouth and vulva.

The mortality rate is high, with about 50 percent of infected adult animals dying from the disease.

Humans cannot catch the disease and the virus can be destroyed at high temperatures, the council said.

Council officials said that while no meat from infected animals has found its way onto the meat market, the virus can survive in a normal environment for up to six months and is transmittable via slaughterhouse facilities or vehicles.

Goat ranches have been instructed to start a self-*monitoring system and notify the council?s Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine immediately if symptoms of the disease are observed, officials said.

The council said it was still investigating the source of the outbreak.

This is the second time the disease has occurred in Taiwan. The first outbreak occurred in July 2008 in Taoyuan County, and was believed to have originated from an animal smuggled into Taiwan from pox-affected areas, which include Vietnam, China, Mongolia, Africa and the Middle East.

The exact source remains unclear, the council said.

Taipei, June 21 (CNA) The spread of goat pox virus (GPV) on ranches in Taiwan has yet to subside, with some 14,000 infected goats culled since the first case this year was confirmed on April 9, the Council of Agriculture (COA) said Monday.

A total of 13,976 pox-infected goats from 127 goat farms in 11 cities and counties -- Chiayi, Tainan and Kaohsiung cities and Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, and Kaohsiung counties -- have been slaughtered as of June 19 to prevent the spread of the virus, said Hsu Tien-lai, director of the COA's Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine.

Hsu said the bureau has so far purchased 230,000 doses of vaccine and is ready to vaccinate all 220,000 goats currently raised in the country.

Hsu does not think the GPV outbreak will drive up goat meat prices, saying that domestically raised goats contribute only about 12 percent of the country's demand, with nearly 90 percent of the demand being met by imports from New Zealand and Australia.

In Kaohsiung County, 2,300 GPV-infected goats from 12 goat farms have been culled, the Kaohsiung County Animal Disease Control Center said.

The culled number constituted about 10 percent of all goats raised in Kaohsiung County. The goats were raised either for meat or milk, according to the center.

Officials from the center said that GPV -- a highly contagious disease of small ruminants that is characterized by fever, ocular and nasal discharges -- is spread via contact among the animals. GPV cannot infect humans and can be destroyed at high temperatures, they added.

Since many farmers in Kaohsiung County who are not regular goat raisers keep a few goats in their neighborhoods, the center urged these people to report to their local county offices and apply to vaccinate their goats.

The COA said it is still investigating the source of the infection.

This was the second time that the disease has been reported in Taiwan. The first outbreak was in July 2008 in northern Taoyuan County and was believed to be started by an animal smuggled into Taiwan from a GPV-affected area, such as Vietnam, China, Mongolia, Africa or the Middle East, but the exact source remained unclear, according to the COA.
