New sub-strain of H5N2 discovered in Changhua

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A new sub-strain of H5N2 bird flu was uncovered yesterday in tests conducted by the Council of Agriculture's (COA) Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ). BAPHIQ announced yesterday that samples from a chicken farm in Changhua County's Shengang Township (伸港鄉) showed a new sub-strain of H5N2 in the nucleic acid of chicken tissue. It is believed that this sub-strain was passed on to chickens for the first time after being first discovered in ducks and geese.
BAPHIQ held a press conference yesterday in which bureau chief Chang Shu-hsian (張淑賢) explained the current status of cumulative submitted samples and the number of farms where livestock have been culled. Test results from a chicken egg farm in Pingtung County that were submitted on Jan. 9 indicated that the farm was infected with the old strain of H5N2, which caused the COA to call for stronger monitoring in the area, according to Chang. Chang indicated that another chicken egg farm in Pingtung also tested positive for the new sub-strain of H5 bird flu, and that the bureau will continue to subsequently classify the strains.
Chang stated that one chicken farm in Pingtung that sent its samples in for testing on Jan. 13 had 240 birds die before the test results were released. The Pingtung County Government ordered that the farm's remaining birds be culled on Saturday night...
