TAIPEI, Taiwan -- This year's free influenza inoculations will start Oct. 1 and last until Nov. 30 for high-risk groups including the elderly, children and medical personnel, the deputy director-general of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said yesterday.

Chou Chih-hau said senior citizens aged over 65, infants between 6 months and two years old, first-and second-grade elementary school students, medical and quarantine personnel at health institutes and employees at poultry farms, will have priority in receiving free vaccinations.

The CDC this year has purchased 2.37 million adult vaccines, and 320,000 vaccines for children to help block transmission of the influenza viruses that are expected to cause the most serious outbreaks of the contagious disease in mid-December.

Chou called on citizens in the priority groups to make good use of the opportunity to be inoculated during these two months. He said that the vaccine acceptance rate in the past years has been only about 60 percent among the priority groups: a low percentage.
