Laying hen farm in the Kanton of Tessin: case confirmed as Newcastle disease
Bern, 18.11.2017 - The suspicion of Newcastle disease in laying hens in southern Tessin has been confirmed. It is a highly contagious viral disease that can affect several species of birds. As the Animal Health Ordinance (TSV) requires, all hens of the affected farm have been killed. There is no danger for consumers.
The present diagnosis shows that, despite monitoring measures, an animal disease can recur even after several years. The Swiss poultry population was free of Newcastle disease; the last case on laying hens took place in 2011. The viral disease is highly contagious and is transmitted through the air or through direct contact. It can also spread indirectly through individuals, poultry products or egg cartons.
The cantonal authorities in Tessin are now taking all necessary measures to prevent the spread of the disease: the poultry on the affected farm is killed and a protection and surveillance zone is set up around the farm.
No danger for consumers
Eggs and poultry meat can be safely consumed and pose no danger to humans. In rare cases, conjunctivitis may occur in persons who have direct and close contact with sick animals.
