Swine flu confirmed in Franklin

H1N1 flu was confirmed last week in a Franklin elementary school.
A pediatrician confirmed a case of H1N1, also called swine flu, in a student who attends Pennyroyal Elementary School, said Superintendent Arnol Elam.
A parent of the student first notified the school of the illness, Elam said.
Elam said a letter was sent home to parents and also posted on the district?s Web site, franklin-city.k12.oh.us.
?The most important thing is to educate the children on how not to pass it along,? Elam said.
The Warren County health commissioner is meeting with school nurses this week on planned vaccinations, Elam said, adding the school district plans to follow the county?s plans.
?Anything they need we?re going to make it happen,? he said.
Many health departments plan to vaccinate children at school if their parent or guardian gives consent.
Students can learn more about the vaccination through a downloadable activities developed by the Center for Chemistry Education at Miami University Middletown.
The Web site, terrificscience.org/flu, provides information for elementary and middle school students to learn about the flu and how vaccines work.
The content also is being picked up by Newspapers in Education, a national program to bring newspapers and current events to the classroom as part of the curriculum.
Supplements will be included in more than 100 newspapers around the country and available online.
