Swine flu assessment clinic opens in Toronto

Toronto's first swine flu assessment clinic is open today at Scarborough Hospital. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week four more will open across the city. Toronto's Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David McKeown said during a press conference held on Thursday that new data shoes H1N1 infection is steadily increasing in Toronto and there is no sign of levelling off.
The assessment centres are designed take pressure off emergency rooms.
Chief Medical Officer of Health of Ontario, Dr.Arlene King has also said that school kids will likely be next in line to get immunized, and that could happen as early as next week. However, Dr. David McKeown, says school-age children will be vaccinated at clinics or by their doctors, not at schools.
Toronto is waiting for details from the province.
According to the city of Toronto website, most people who get sick with the flu recover fully without medical treatment. However, anyone who thinks they have H1N1 and feels they need medical treatment should first make an appointment with a doctor. If they don't have a doctor or access to a walk-in clinic, then the flu assessment centres can provide treatment and referral services. Flu Assessment Centres do not take the place of emergency rooms, and do not treat people with severe illness.
