Another swan dies in Eagle Pond
ANOTHER dead swan has been found floating in rubbish on Eagle Pond prompting calls for an urgent clean-up.

The bird's discovery, close to Snaresbrook Road, has led to fears the pond's water has once again been poisoned by disgarded food waste, a problem which caused the death of more than 40 wildfowl in a single day during the summer.

An RSPCA inspector found another seriously ill swan on the other side of the pond when he arrived at the scene.

Poison water is killing the birds

POLICE are monitoring a pond in north-east London where restaurants are believed to be killing birds by dumping food.

The body of another dead swan was found recently near Eagle Pond in Snaresbrook, where dozens of wildfowl have died since the summer because of pollution caused by discarded waste.

Snaresbrook ward Councillor Sue Nolan, says police have begun to monitor the area to stop the dumping of waste, ranging from bread to raw meat, which has gradually poisoned the water.

She said: "We had a meeting with the Corporation of London who has responsibility for the pond, and they said people have been throwing in too much food, which has rotted and emitted harmful bacteria, killing the wildlife.

"By the look of the kinds of food thrown in, and the quantity, it appears takeaway outlets or restaurants may be responsible.

"Some of the food isn't very good for the birds anyway. They aren't designed to eat curry."

Paul Oliver, of Stoneleigh Road, Clayhall, who discovered the swan's body, claims the pond is unrecognisable from the place he loved visiting as a child and called for more action to be taken to clean it up.

He said: "I've lived in the area for more than 30 years and I have never seen the Eagle Pond in such a terrible state.

"There used to be hundreds of birds of all types on that pond but their numbers have dropped significantly.

"This swan was just floating dead in a load of stinking algae. Why is it so difficult to keep the pond clean?"

A spokeswoman for the Corporation of London called on visitors to the area to keep an eye out for people dumping food and says a team of litter pickers, including officers in waders, have been working hard to keep the water clear of rubbish.

The Corporation has also issued a special leaflet to guide people who feed the birds and placed additional litter bins at the site.

Snaresbrook ward Cllr Christopher Cummins has called on people to stop feeding the birds until a solution is found to reduce the level of waste in the pond.
