SARASOTA - Emergency rooms saw a surge in patients last week with flulike symptoms and the county health department is reporting the first suspected death from swine flu since July.
The health department is waiting for test results to confirm that a 27-year-old Sarasota man died Wednesday from swine, or H1N1, flu. If swine flu is confirmed as the cause, his death would be the third in the area from the flu.
Meanwhile, Sarasota County Schools reported its first cluster of absences in a kindergarten class at Emma E. Booker Elementary School. Over a several-day period recently, 11 students were absent for flulike symptoms. Parents of all students in the class were notified of the apparent cluster in a letter Friday from the health department.
People are advised to wash hands frequently, stay home from work or school if symptoms arise, and see a doctor or seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
