Worldwide, it appears that almost one person in ten has ?seriously considered? ending their life on at least one occasion. This fact, which is disconcerting to say the least, is the finding of a study involving 85,000 adults in 17 countries and conducted by teams from Harvard University and the WHO.
Germany, South Africa, Belgium, China, Colombia, Spain, the United States, France, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria and the Netherlands ? all very different countries, and different when it comes to suicide. For example, it appears that only 3.1% of Chinese people have ever considered suicide. However, in New Zealand the figure is as high as 16%.
As for the transition from contemplating suicide to attempting it, this was found to be true overall of 2.7% of the group studied. According to the authors, ?the idea that suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts mainly concern people suffering from depression is false. Actual suicide attempts are in fact more common among those who take psychotropic drugs and who suffer from anxiety disorders?.
Around 11,000 deaths from suicide are recorded every year in France, which makes it one of the countries most seriously affected by suicide. And worldwide, more than a million people take their own lives every year.
