WA doctors and hospitals are bracing for a surge in flu cases in the next month, after experts warned the number of cases had risen sharply in the Eastern States in recent weeks following an unusually high rate of infection over summer and autumn.
They warned yesterday a time lag of several weeks meant WA could see its own wave of flu cases in the next two to four weeks, with the peak expected in late August or September.
The Australian Medical Association warned that WA hospitals were already running at capacity and would struggle to cope with a big influx of flu patients.
The Influenza Specialist Group, a national advisory group, said there had been almost 8000 official notifications of flu so far this year compared with fewer than 2000 at the same time last year.
More than 3800 cases had been reported in the past six weeks, with Queensland, NSW and South Australia bearing the brunt of infections.
