A Kern County man is the first person in the state to die of complications from the flu this season, state health officials said Thursday.The man was in his late 30s.Dr. Ron Chapman, director of the California Department of Public Health and state public health officer, said the Kern County man's death is a "somber reminder that the flu can be a serious and even deadly disease."Thus far, flu activity has been sporadic statewide and few cases have been reported in the central San Joaquin Valley.In Fresno County, health officials know of only one positive test for influenza A, said Pat Kirby, the interim manager of Fresno County's Community Health Division.
