State probes illness at Greystone; 1 died

PARSIPPANY (AP) -- A flu-like illness has broken out at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital, where one patient recently died and another became seriously ill.
All told, more than 30 people have been sickened at the 580-patient hospital.
State officials are investigating the cause of death of a 63-year-old Bergen County woman who died Wednesday, and stressed that no link has yet been developed between the illness and her death.
The "diarrheal disease" broke out in the hospital in late February, Gary Brown, a spokesman for the state Department of Human Services, told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Friday's newspapers.
The hospital embarked on a set of extra precautions, including changing bed linens each day and doing additional cleaning of bathroom and kitchens.
The woman who died was taken to Morristown Memorial Hospital after growing worse at Greystone. Officials would not release her name, citing patient confidentiality rules.
The newspaper cited hospital employees and people with direct knowledge of the case who said the woman had previously suffered breast cancer and a heart attack, which could have made her susceptible to the viral infection.
A 59-year-old Morris County man also was taken to an outside hospital where he was being treated for severe vomiting and further medical complications.
