Surgeries are being postponed in the eastern region of Newfoundland, including St. John's, because of the flu pandemic.

Top officials at the Eastern Regional Health Authority say they've have to scale back operations because hundreds of health workers are calling in sick with flu-like symptoms.

"There is a 30 per cent [staff] reduction in our operating rooms across the Health Sciences Centre and St. Clare's Mercy Hospital," Eastern Health CEO Vickie Kaminski said Tuesday. "So, the surgeons all get together and look at what's scheduled for tomorrow and decide on a priority basis what can be rescheduled."

Kaminski said there is a shortage of beds for patients who have had surgery because of all the H1N1 patients in the hospital.

Kaminski says the health authority may have to consider rescheduling surgeries at other facilities in Eastern Health's region, including the Dr. GB Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville, if the number of people hospitalized with H1N1 symptoms continues to climb.
