Oct 01, Colombo: Dengue fever is raising its head again in Sri Lanka, Health Department sources said. Some 32 deaths among 7,270 infected cases were reported this year as of mid-September.
Sixty percent of the cases were reported from the Western Province in the Colombo, Kalutara and Gampaha districts. Seven of the deaths were recorded in Colombo.
Man-made mosquito breeding grounds are the main cause for the spread of the decease. The dengue mosquito needs little but pure water to breed. They find abundant breeding grounds in the non-biodegradable items that are not properly disposed.
Government health authorities have initiated an awareness campaign targeting householders, schoolchildren, public and private employees and tyre traders. Public health inspectors have been instructed to take legal action against persons who fail to destroy mosquito breeding grounds in their surroundings.
