Two American minks detected with coronavirus in the Castell?n rivers Palancia and Mijares

The Management Consortium of the Protected Landscape of the Mouth of the River Mijares, formed by the municipalities of Almassora, Borriana, Vila-real, the Diputaci?n de Castell?n and the Generalitat Valenciana, has canceled the monitoring, surveillance and control works of the American mink (Neovison vison ) by indication of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition after several environmental agents captured two specimens of this exotic species in the Palancia and Mijares rivers, in the latter in the municipality of Torrechiva, with coronavirus.

Thus, the animals were delivered to the Veterinary Faculty of the Cardenal Herrera CEU San Pablo University of Valencia, which, after a first analysis, confirmed the presence of the SARS-COV2 virus in the body of the two mustelids.

Now, to prevent the health of the technicians, environmental agents and rural guards of the Mijares River Consortium, the immediate suspension of the campaign has been decided until a new protocol is available to protect the management of this exotic wild species introduced into the Valencian rivers

Galicia mink farm closed after detection of another Covid outbreak

The American mink farm concerned is located in Carral in the province of A Coruña and the regional Department of the Environment reports that the outbreak has been reported to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Food. The protocol for the control and eradication of this invasive species, which has been in place since 2004, allowed technical personnel to detect the presence of coronavirus in five animals, all of them asymptomatic, and the samples will now be analysed to establish which strain of SARS-CoV-2 is involved.

There are currently 25 registered mink farms in Galicia with a total of 71,479 reproducing females, and this is the fourth registered Covid-19 outbreak among them over the last 15 months.

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
The positive laboratory result was obtained during the routine active surveillance that Spain carries out in all such farms whereby nasopharyngeal swabs are collected from up to eight dead animals in the farm every 15 days. Until this positive result was obtained in the farm, there was no evidence of abnormally increased mortalities or signs consistent with the disease in the animals.
