Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever case confirmed in Salamanca province in Spain

May 3, 2021

In Spain , the General Directorate of Public Health of the Junta de Castilla y Le?n has confirmed a case of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever ( CCHF ) in the province of Salamanca .

The confirmed case is a 59-year-old man who, after symptoms compatible with FHCCet due to his farming profession, contact with animals and recent tick bites, a diagnostic test for CCHF tested positive for the "Carlos III" Health Institute. The patient has been hospitalized for several days in the Infectious Diseases Department in a room with the isolation measures provided for in these cases and his clinical condition is stable.

First described in 1944 in Soviet soldiers in Crimea, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) was also identified in 1956 in Congo, hence its name. CHF Canada has been on the WHO list of the most important emerging infectious diseases likely to cause major epidemics since 2015 and is currently considered a priority disease with pandemic potential.
