The National Center for Biotechnology is a key institution where high-risk viruses and bacteria are analyzed. “Here we work with pathogens that pose a very high risk to humans,” adds Aitor.
For now, transmission from birds to people remains rare. Nogales, an avian flu expert, states: "We are studying the population's immunological preparation for a possible avian flu pandemic and are also developing vaccines against this pathogen. We are not prepared immunologically."
