Thousands of chickens have been slaughtered in Valladolid, and a new outbreak has been confirmed in Doñana
.
CSIC researchers warn that bacterial resistance and other viruses are worsening the health situation and a fourth outbreak has been detected in Doñana National Park. With the death of two storks, specialists are beginning to prepare for a possible pandemic scenario.
Instead of thinking about the odds of playing a slot machine, scientists are urging us to imagine the risk of a virus that lethally affects birds. One of its variants has already mutated and can infect humans.

“The question isn't whether there will be a new flu pandemic, the question is when the new flu pandemic will happen and where it will come from. But history tells us there will be a new flu pandemic,” explains Aitor Nogales, a CSIC researcher and avian flu specialist.

The jump to humans, the great threat
The National Center for Biotechnology is a key institution where high-risk viruses and bacteria are analyzed. “Here we work with pathogens that pose a very high risk to humans,” adds Aitor.

For now, transmission from birds to people remains rare. Nogales, an avian flu expert, states: "We are studying the population's immunological preparation for a possible avian flu pandemic and are also developing vaccines against this pathogen. We are not prepared immunologically."
