SEOUL, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) - An additional case of foot-and- mouth disease has been confirmed Monday in Goyang City, near Seoul, aggravating fears that quarantine efforts have failed to prevent spread of the highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven- hoofed animals.

A suspected case reported from a beef cattle farm in Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province, tested positive for foot-and-mouth disease, the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said. The ministry added that the affected farm raises 53 beef cattle.

"All 53 heads of cattle on the farm have been culled to prevent further spread of the disease," it said.

With the latest confirmed case in Goyang City, the number of regions in the Seoul metropolitan area hit by foot-and-mouth disease has increased to four, including Paju City, Yangju City and Yeoncheon County, all in Gyeonggi Province.

December 24, 2010, 4:33 Seoul, Dec. 24 (PL) South Korean health officials today confirmed two more cases of foot and mouth disease into new regions, making it necessary to increase the number of cattle to slaughter and to launch a vaccination campaign from morning.

The infections were reported this time in the Ganghwa Island (northwest coast) and in the Gangwon province, in a pig farm and a dairy Hoengseong County -140 kilometers east of Seoul, respectively.

All affected animals, and those that live within a radius of 500 meters, will be killed, according to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, cited by media.

The outbreak, considered the most serious in U.S. history, forced the government to opt for the vaccination of cattle, after the quarantine and decontamination methods were insufficient to stop the spread of evil.

The first cases in this outbreak were detected on 29 November in North Gyeongsang province, southeast of Baghdad, which soon after added another in areas north of here, even in areas of great importance for country for its beef production.

This situation led the authorities to order the slaughter of about 300 thousand heads of cattle. The losses for this reason is estimated at some 350 million U.S. dollars.

In 2000 South Korea reported its first outbreak of this evil, a problem that was repeated in 2002, while this year added three.
