Prime Minister Han issues emergency order for quarantine measures including culling due to African swine fever outbreak

Confirmed positive at a pig farm in Yeongcheon, Gyeongbuk on the 12th… Order to stop vehicle movement

2024.08.13 Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo received a report on the outbreak of African swine fever in Yeongcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do on the 12th and urgently instructed the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to promptly implement quarantine measures in accordance with emergency action guidelines, including access control, intensive disinfection, culling, epidemiological investigation, and temporary suspension of movement at the affected farm.

In addition, the Ministry of Environment emphasized that it is focusing its efforts on searching and capturing wild boar carcasses in the area around the outbreak farm, and that relevant ministries, local governments, and related organizations should actively cooperate in implementing quarantine measures.

In addition, he instructed that all efforts be made to prevent the spread of lumpy skin disease at a Hanwoo farm in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, including rapid testing and vaccination.

Prime Minister Han then emphasized that it is very important to follow basic quarantine rules on farms to prevent livestock diseases, and asked farmers to thoroughly follow quarantine rules, such as farm hygiene management and thorough disinfection of vehicles entering and leaving.

On this day, the African Swine Fever Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters announced that a positive case of African swine fever was confirmed as a result of a detailed inspection following a report of pig deaths at a pig farm in Yeongcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

In order to prevent the spread of African swine fever, the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters has dispatched an initial quarantine team and an epidemiological investigation team to the farm in question to control the entry of outsiders, livestock, and vehicles into the farm. In addition to conducting an epidemiological investigation, the pigs being raised at the farm in question will be culled in accordance with the emergency action guidelines (SOP).

In addition, in order to block contamination in the outbreak area, available disinfection resources will be mobilized to intensively disinfect pig farms and surrounding roads in Yeongcheon City, and a temporary movement ban will be issued for workers and vehicles at livestock facilities such as pig farms, slaughterhouses, and feed factories in eight cities and counties, including Yeongcheon, Gyeongsan, Cheongdo, Gyeongju, Pohang, and Cheongsong in Gyeongbuk Province and Dong-gu and Gunwi in Daegu, for 24 hours from 11 p.m. on the 12th to 11 p.m. on the 13th. During the movement restriction period, intensive disinfection will be carried out.

Meanwhile, the supply of pork this month is expected to be similar to last year, and the number of pigs raised at farms where African swine fever broke out this time is about 0.01% of the total, so the culling is not expected to have a significant impact on the domestic pork supply and demand.

The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters emphasized that relevant organizations and local governments should take preventive measures such as prompt culling, thorough inspection, and intensive disinfection to prevent the spread of African swine fever, and requested that pig farms thoroughly disinfect the inside and outside of farms, refrain from entering areas where wild boars appear, and follow basic quarantine rules such as changing boots when entering and leaving livestock sheds.

Sun, Oct 13 2024 08:36:11 PM

Seoul/New Delhi, Oct 13 (IANS): South Korea has confirmed its ninth case of African swine fever (ASF) of the year, officials said on Sunday, as India remains vigilant about the outbreak of the disease.

The latest ASF case was found at a pig farm in Hwacheon, some 88 kilometers northeast of Seoul in Gangwon Province. More than 3,500 pigs at the farm will be slaughtered, according to the farm ministry.

The previous case was detected at a local pig farm in late August...
