What is going on with these diseases? Anyway, the last time we heard from this area in the southern tip of India was on July 27th, about 6 weeks ago, in which the hospitals were becoming full from the viral fever outbreak in the area. Before that, in April, they reported that many of the doctors and med students were catching dengue [seriously!]. And in March, the zoo started incinerating all their dead animals.

Chikungunya: Mob blocks road
Sunday September 3 2006 10:58 IST THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The authorities’ alleged failure to check the spread of chikungunya in the coastal area of Vizhinjam led to violent scenes on Saturday with a mob blocking the road and damaging the panchayat office building.

The people blocked the main road at Vizhinjam demanding immediate measures to check the spread of the disease. A section of them started damaging the vehicles and also ransacked the panchayat office. The glass panes of the office were damaged in the attack.

Later the issue was settled with the intervention of District Collector N Ayyappan, City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham and Geroge Mercier MLA.

In the talks with the representatives of the people, the Collector assured them that a team of ten doctors would be deputed to Vizhinjam for treatment of patients. Their service will be available round the clock till the spread of disease is controlled.

The collector has also called a meeting of the people’s representatives at his chamber on September 13 to assess the situation. Based on the assurance from the Collector, the mob dispersed.
