COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has confirmed two cases of monkeypox in South Carolina – one in the Midlands and the other in the Lowcountry.

“We expected infections to eventually occur in South Carolina as part of the larger international outbreak, which is why DHEC has been planning a response for weeks,” State Epidemiologist Dr. Lina Bell said. “That said, monkeypox doesn’t spread easily and we believe the risk to the general population remains low at this time.”...

Health officials are reporting 4 confirmed cases of monkeypox infection in South Carolina.

The DHEC is responding to cases and vaccinating high-risk contacts with a safe FDA-approved vaccine for monkeypox.

COLUMBIA, S.C. ― The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has confirmed two cases of monkeypox infection. One case is in a person in the Midlands region and the other is a person in the Lowcountry region. The affected individuals will be monitored until they are no longer infectious to prevent spread of the virus and will be isolated if needed. Appropriate care will be provided as needed...

SC health department reporting 23 monkeypox cases

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting more than 6,300 cases of the Monkeypox virus across the U.S., including 23 in South Carolina.

Seven of those 23 are in the Lowcountry.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control provided an update on the outbreak Wednesday, reporting a very different situation here than in other parts of the country. New York, California and Illinois are reporting a combined 3,000 cases and have declared the outbreak a state of emergency.

The virus can cause flu-like symptoms, rashes and lesions. The first case in South Carolina appeared in July, and with the case number now over 20, officials with DHEC want to remind the public anyone can get the virus.
