So far, 3,153 deaths due to novel A/H1N1 influenza have been registered and reported from countries in South America, according to ECDC 23 Dec daily update http://ecdc.europa.eu/en/healthtopics/Documents/091223_Influenza_AH1N1_Situation_Report_0900hrs.pdf

Measuring death rate by dividing number of lethal cases by total population standings as of mid-year 2009* returns the following tabulation

Interesting observation

Notice the three southernmost countries on top of the 'chart', while the five northernmost countries are occupying all the five last positions of the table
