Cases of malaria have increased in Limpopo's Vhembe and Mopani
districts over the past week [week ending 27 Dec 2009], the
provincial health department said on Wednesday [30 Dec 2009].
So far, more than 80 people had been treated for malaria in various
hospitals and clinics, said spokesman Selby Makgatho. "Ten of them
were treated at the Donald Fraser hospital, 9 at Tshilidzini and 4 at
Malamulele hospital over the Christmas weekend," said Makgatho.
Last week alone, 36 cases were reported in Mopani, east of Giyani,
while 22 other cases were reported in areas around Ba-Phalaborwa. The
department urged communities to immediately consult their nearest
health facilities if they experience flu-like symptoms such as body
pains, headaches and fever.
"All health facilities were ready and fully equipped to deal with
malaria cases. We will be using community gatherings such as
funerals, tribal authority meetings as well as community meetings to
promote awareness campaigns during this rainy season," said Makgatho.

[Limpopo province is one of the malaria prone areas in South Africa
due the low altitude that favours malaria transmission in parts of
the province. The other areas with conditions favorable for malaria
transmission include Mpumalanga province and KwaZulu Natal province.
The malaria control program in South Africa has relied heavily on the
use of indoor residual spraying using dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane
(DDT). The program was so successful in some areas that it was
stopped altogether and only re-introduced after periods of heavy
rains, when malaria cases tend to rise, as is the case currently in
Limpopo. There is need, therefore, to evaluate the control measures
that are currently being used in Limpopo province so as to decide the
best intervention to the current upsurge.
