Alert issued for potential German measles outbreak in Garden Route

The Garden Route District Municipality officially announced a series of suspected Rubella cases, also called German measles, in George.

According to Herman Pieters, the head of communications, this constitutes a ‘pocket outbreak,’ with suspected cases identified in Thembalethu, Borchards, Rosedale, Parkdene, Conville, and Pacaltsdorp.​..

Measles and Rubella Monthly Surveillance Report (Aug 2024)

From epidemiological week 1 to week 33 of 2024, 178 laboratory-confirmed cases of measles and 2059 cases of rubella were reported in South Africa. Measles transmission has decreased in the Sedibeng district with the last measles case reported in week 30 of 2024. Twenty-one(21) laboratory-confirmed measles cases were reported from epidemiological week 30 (21 July 2024) to week 33 from seven provinces, Eastern Cape 3 cases, Free State 1, Gauteng 8 cases, KwaZulu-Natal 2 cases, Limpopo 1 case, Northern Cape 2 cases and Western Cape 4 cases.​..

Measles and rubella cases in South Africa hit decade-high

South Africa has had more than 10 000 reported cases of measles and rubella this year, with children between the ages of five and nine making up more than half of these cases, Cape {town} Etc reports.

According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases of South Africa (NICD), it is the largest amount of measles and rubella cases in South Africa since 2015.

The NICD surveyed cases of measles and rubella from 1 January to 16 November this year, stating that there were 626 measles cases and 10 137 rubella cases throughout the country in 2024.

While rubella circulation has decreased in the Western Cape Province, it has increased in the North West Province. Other provinces in the country have continued to have high rubella positivity rates, including Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Cape.

Gauteng had the highest reported cases of measles and rubella, with 285 cases for measles and 2 603 cases for rubella.​..
