Cholera detected in Limpopo
Story by Goitsemang Matlhabe • 12h

Health authorities have urged communities in Limpopo to be cautious as laboratory results have confirmed a resurgence of cholera cases across parts of the province.

Deputy Health Minister Dr Sbongiseni Dhlomo urged communities to remain vigilant and maintain personal hygiene.

Two laboratory-confirmed cases of the waterborne disease were detected in the province recently.

The department said the first case detected was in the Vhembe district following the admission of a 43-year-old male patient who had tested positive for the disease, while the second case had been detected at Helen Franz hospital in the Capricorn District municipality.

In the second case, a 27-year-old man from Zimbabwe had presented himself at the hospital, indicating that he had been experiencing abdominal cramps, watery diarrhoea and vomiting since January 11.

The patient had travelled to Zimbabwe on December 9, and returned to South Africa on January 10...

Health Dept detects 5 cholera cases in Limpopo: ‘SA doesn’t have an outbreak’ - Phaahla

JOHANNESBURG - Five cholera cases have been confirmed in Limpopo with the National Health Department monitoring 46 other suspected cases in the province.

Minister Joe Phaahla revealed this at a media briefing in Pretoria on Monday, where he also addressed the issue of unemployed medical doctors.

Phaahla said three of the cases were imported from Zimbabwe, while the other two patients have no travel history.

Neighbouring countries including Zimbabwe are currently battling an outbreak of the bacterial infection.

The minister assured residents that there was no outbreak in the country...

MORE than 150 suspected cases with one death have been confirmed between 1 January and 18 April 2024

The Minister of Health Joe Phaahla said 11 of these cases were registered in Limpopo and one in Gauteng.

This was announced by Phaahla on Friday, 19 April when he reported on the state of public health in the country.

Phaahla also pointed out that some of these cases originated from outside the country.

“Three of these cases were imported from Zimbabwe with no clear history of contact with other confirmed cases... The risk of both imported cases and local transmission remains high due to cross-border movements to and from Zimbabwe and Mozambique,” he said.

These confirmed cases have also claimed the life of a 48-year-old man.

A man from Musina in Vhembe District, who had diarrhoea, was admitted on 16 March and died on 21 March at Pietersburg Hospital, Phaahla said...
