Sonoma County swine flu death toll rises

Two Sonoma County residents have died of the swine flu in the past month, raising the number of county deaths from the flu virus to five, a county health official said Thursday.
The deaths represent the fourth man and the first woman in Sonoma County linked to the strain of H1N1 virus.
?Both had fairly serious underlying chronic health conditions,? said Mark Netherda, Sonoma County?s public health officer.
County public health officials refuse to release names and ages of the victims Swine flu or towns of residence. Netherda said the two weren?t children or young adults. He said they were middle-aged or older.
The first county fatality was June 20 and was an elderly man with a pre-existing medical condition.
Forestville resident John ?JD? Dmitri Kaiwi, 43, died July 7, his family said. He had a previously unknown heart ailment.
On July 17, Petaluma resident Timothy Sturm, 39, died after contracting the flu. He had suffered from mild asthma, according to family members.
The strain of H1N1 virus is taking a toll on middle-age people who have not developed immunities, Netherda said.
The national average age of those succumbing to the virus is 49 years, Netherda has said.
