Rift Valley Fever - Somalia
The cumulative number of suspected human RVF cases reported as of 17 January 2007 is 84, and 49 deaths with RVF symptoms (line listing started on 12 December 2006).
First specimen from 2 human RVF cases received on 16 January 2007 for investigation by KEMRI/CDC reference laboratory in Nairobi. Results expected by Thursday 18 January 2007.
Specimens from animals still to be collected for RVF confirmation.

Rift Valley Fever - Somalia
Bardere town: The head of Dr Ayu MCH in Bardere town reported the death of a 50 year old male with fever, bleeding from rectum, nose and mouth. The reported case came from village called BAROWDIINLE, 35 km from Bardere.
Other cases were also reported from BARAKA village: 3 women all with suspected symptoms of RVF.
This is the first report of suspected RVF in Gedo Region, outside Lower Juba.
Kismayo Hospital: One new reported case of suspected RVF admitted. The case is coming from Afmadow. WHO has collected blood samples for investigation. But there is no flight out of Kismayo and the samples have been sent to Mogadishu to be airlifted on Tuesday.
In Bardere around 80% of the animals are reported suffering from abortions.
Existence of a livestock market in JAWAREY village where animals from Lower, Middle Juba and Kenyan border are gathered.
Acute watery diahrrea (AWD)
Beletweyne: increased number of diarrheoal cases reported. WHO is collecting stool samples from these cases.
Yesterday a total of 23 reported cases of acute watery diahrreoa (AWD) in children, in North Western Zone of Somaliland, Saylac area bordering Djibouti, also experiencing an outbreak of suspected cholera. WHO and UNICEF are jointly providing Cholera supplies and sending a joint investigation and response mission to the Somali area.
