Namibian farmer dies of Congo haemorrhagic fever in Bloemfontein
A farmer from Namibia died in the Life Rosepark hospital in Bloemfontein after being bitten by a tick and contracting the highly infectious Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever.

Namibia: //Karas On Alert for Congo Fever

THE Keetmanshoop State Hospital principal medical officer, Dr Davies Nkalamo, said the regional health authority will take preventative measures to avoid the spread of Congo haemorrhagic fever after a commercial farmer succumbed to the deadly disease this week.

"The disease is primarily transmitted through animals, but it is also passed on from human to human," said Nkalamo, adding that the medical staff would take blood samples from the family members who were in contact with the deceased before he had died, to determine whether any of them has the disease.

Kobie Hoffmann died shortly after being admitted to the Life Rosapark Hospital in Bloemfontein, South Africa, and diagnosed with Congo fever.

Nkalamo said the Hoffman family would be restricted to their farm until the outcome of blood tests.

Nkalamo advised the family not to "move around" in the meantime.

Petro Hoffmann said her son Kobie (40) contracted the infectious disease after he was bitten by a tick while doing sheep work at the farm two weeks ago...
