Chickens can be killed by slow suffocation in the event of a widespread bird flu outbreak, the High Court ruled yesterday.

The RSPCA had been seeking a ruling outlawing the method - which cuts off air to infected poultry houses - as cruel and incompatible with EU laws.

But Lord Justice Auld said the government was entitled to use it 'as a last resort'.
