Six local H1N1 flu cases confirmed in Trinidad: Health Ministry

Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan said there were six confirmed influenza A H1N1 virus (swine flu) cases in T&T, but assured the public there was no need to panic.



He could not confirm that there was a death at the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) last Saturday as a result of the virus.



?There?s a possibility...Most likely it was,? Khan said.



Khan explained it was likely the public?s recent fear and concern were triggered by reports of instances of death as a result of the virus in neighbouring countries. According to reports, one person has died in Barbados.

2 suspected Swine Flu deaths

HEALTH Minister Dr Fuad Khan says there are ?two suspected cases of H1N1-related deaths in Trinidad.?

Speaking with Newsday yesterday evening by telephone, Khan stressed the word ?suspected,? saying it usually takes ?a couple of days? to determine whether or not H1N1, commonly referred to as Swine Flu, was responsible for the ?acute respiratory distress syndrome present in these two deaths?.

?Although you have positive stereotypes, that does not mean H1N1 was the cause, which is why these deaths are currently listed as ?suspected?,? Khan said.

Earlier in the day, he made no mention of these suspected H1N1 cases while speaking at the post- Cabinet press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister, St Clair.

Khan did however state there are no cases of bird flu in Trinidad and Tobago at this time. He then confirmed six new cases of H1N1 ? the first publically reported cases since that virus was confirmed in this country back in 2010.

Swine flu vaccines arrive

VACCINES against the Influenza A (H1N1) virus, commonly known as ?swine flu?, were received last Friday night at the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH).
Medical director of the SFGH Dr Anand Chattergoon said yesterday that the vaccines were sent from the National Insurance Property Development Company Ltd warehouse C40 at Chaguaramas.
Chattergoon said the vaccines will be distributed to H1N1 patients as well as ?people who are at risk? such as doctors, nurses and others who interact with patients.
?I don?t think there is any need to panic,? said Chattergoon. ?Everything is under control.?

South-West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) director of health Dr Shivanand Gopeesingh said yesterday that there were no new cases of influenza A H1N1 or swine flu virus at the San Fernando General Hospital.

Gopeesingh advised people with viral illnesses not to panic, as not all cases may be swine flu. There were three confirmed cases at the hospital, and one person died, he said...
