H1N1: Girl, 6, among five new ICU cases

FIVE more H1N1 patients, all female, have been warded in intensive care since Friday, including a six-year-old girl.
The child, who was warded at the National University Hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) on Friday, has a history of asthma.
Two were warded in ICU on Saturday: A 25-year-old woman at NUH also with asthma and who is 26 weeks pregnant, and a 52-year-old woman at Changi General Hospital (CGH) with end-stage renal failure, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Tan Tock Seng Hospital reported two ICU cases on Sunday and yesterday: A 49-year-old woman with diabetes and high blood pressure, and a 70-year-old woman with diabetes, high blood pressure, end-stage renal failure and high cholesterol.
Meanwhile, the sixth H1N1 fatality in Singapore had had a body mass index of more than 30, which is classifed as obese, said her doctor.
The 29-year-old woman, who died on Sunday, was the only one so far without pre-existing medical conditions.
Dr Jagadesan Raghuram, who heads the Respiratory Medicine Division at CGH, told 938LIVE: "The exact relation between H1N1 and obesity is not known yet, but there is speculation that obesity is related to a number of conditions like diabetes, hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases ...
"These conditions may put them at a higher risk of getting H1N1 and having a severe disease thereafter."
The World Health Organization says obese people may be at high risk of developing complications from the virus, although a direct link has yet to be established.
