Emergency Preparedness Week starts Monday: Are you ready?; County says it's planning for anything

Are you ready for an emergency? Simcoe County is.
With Emergency Preparedness Week poised to begin May 4, Simcoe "has developed a comprehensive 'all-hazards' emergency response plan that is adaptable to many different types of emergencies, and has also developed response plans that are specific to certain types of emergencies," said Cathy Clark, the county's manager of 911 and Emergency Planning.
"For example, we have a plan that specifically addresses emergency social services issues in the event of a mass evacuation, and a plan that specifically addresses an outbreak of pandemic influenza."
The county's emergency response plan is posted on the County's website at www.simcoe.ca.
National Emergency Preparedness Week runs from May 4-10. Part of its purpose is to encourage individuals and families to consider the types of emergencies most common to the region(s) in which they live and work and to prepare for these types of emergencies," said Clark. "We encourage individuals and families to be prepared to provide their own necessities of life for at least 72 hours."
There are three easy steps that individuals and families can take to be prepared:
1) Know the risks common to your region
2) Develop a family emergency plan that includes a planned meeting location and contact number for all family members
3) Have an emergency preparedness kit that will help you take care of all members of your household for at least 72 hours. The kit should include such things as water, non-perishable food, radio and batteries, medication, and specialized items for infants or pets if appropriate.
As the Community Emergency Management co-ordinator, Clark said one of her duties is to "work closely with the emergency management coordinators of the 21 communities located within the geographical boundaries of the county, and with the emergency management coordinators of our neighbouring upper tier municipalities," in particular York Region and the District Municipality of Muskoka.
That planning involves "senior staff from police, fire, and paramedic services, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit and other community agencies such as the Canadian Red Cross," Clark said.
