Silicosis claim lives of tribal factory workers in MP

STAFF WRITER 10:36 HRS IST
New Delhi, Dec 6 (PTI) At least 259 tribal labourers of Madhya Pradesh have in the last few years died of Silicosis and over 300 others are suffering from the deadly lung disease to which they allegedly fell victim while working in factories in the neighbouring Godhra district of Gujarat.

This has been conveyed to the National Human Rights Commission by Madhya Pradesh's Jhabua district administration, rights body member P C Sharma told PTI.

"Jhabua district magistrate has recently confirmed that 259 persons (tribals) have, so far, died of Silicosis and 304 others are suffering from the deadly disease in the district," Sharma said.

These tribals had reportedly fallen victim to the "killer" disease while working at factories in Godhra, he added.

Sharma said Commission was already pursuing the matter since complaints were filed by some NGOs in this regard earlier.
