Sick Kids Put School On Alert For H1N1
Abramson Charter School Taking Precautions After Student Sickened

NEW ORLEANS -- Parents are pulling their kids out of a New Orleans East school over concerns about a possible H1N1 outbreak.
The principal at Abramson Charter School on Read Boulevard told WDSU that one child had to go to the emergency room because of flu-like symptoms. And four or five other kids with coughs were snet home as a precaution.
Now the Recovery School District is waiting to see if the students have swine flu.
"There was a child that had been taken sick, flu-like symptoms, taken to the hospital. (There's) no confirmation that the child has the swine flu or anything," said Schools Superintendent Paul Vallas.
Meanwhile, students at the school are getting a refresher course on preventing the disease. Kindergartners sang their ABCs while washing to their hands Thursday, making sure they get rid of all the germs.
"I hope it's not a big scare," said parent Andrea Riley. "Hopefully, it will be resolved. You know, you hear about the swine flu ... so hopefully it's just something minor."
The school is not being shut down. The schools medical adviser, WDSU medical editor Dr. Corey Hebert, checked out the school and gave it the OK. As a precaution, the school will be sanitized.
"That means that you wipe everything down. You sanitize the bathrooms -- it's kind of like a precaution," Vallas said.
It's a precaution for which parents are grateful, and they're hoping to get more information about how to keep their kids safe.
"We are going to send letters to the parents about what they need to do for the flu-like symptoms," said Principal Hasan Sazzi.
