Should the Bay Area care about COVID case increases anymore?

Eric Ting, SFGATE
Nov. 10, 2021

Last week, every county in the San Francisco Bay Area was returned to the "substantial" and "high" tiers of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's county-by-county COVID-19 data tracker, resetting clocks to lift indoor mask mandates and sparking considerable coverage from local publications.

COVID-19 cases have plateaued in the Bay Area as the weather cools and individuals head indoors. Health experts have long predicted "some uptick" in the region during the winter months in a manner similar to the seasonal flu and common cold.

Because of the Bay Area's high vaccination rate, as well as the fact that COVID-19 vaccines are highly protective against hospitalization and severe disease, two separate experts from UCSF — Drs. George Rutherford and Monica Gandhi — do not believe the region is at risk of seeing overwhelmed hospitals this winter.

But they disagree on whether the Bay Area public at-large should cease to care about case increases — even if seasonal winter upticks of COVID-19 become a recurring occurrence as the disease becomes endemic...

Ok...well...I am going to say it. A LOT of people who suspect they might have COVID-19 do NOT get tested. Most wait and see how their symptoms develop.

We are flying blind. We have no idea what the real case numbers are - anywhere. We have no idea how many people have, essentially, expired vaccine protection.

Watch the hospitalization numbers. Overburdened emergency rooms are a sign....stay tuned to your local news....

Take care of you.
