For the second consecutive year, a severe influenza cases surveillance was set
up during the winter 2010-2011. A reporting form had to be filled in and sent
to the InVS regional offices (Cire), for all suspected and confirmed influenza
cases admitted to intensive care units (ICU).
There were 789 cases reported, mainly due to A(H1N1 pdm09 and occurring
among people under 65 (82%) with underlying conditions (62%) as observed
last year. Compared to the pandemic, the total number of cases was reduced
by half. A lower proportion of 5-14 year old children were admitted but a
higher proportion of patients with no underlying conditions or with obesity,
presenting with acute respiratory distress syndrome or requiring extracorporeal
oxygenation were observed compared to previous season. The case fatality
ratio was similar. The 97 cases linked to a B or A(H3N2) infection presented
a less severe disease compared to those infected with A(H1N1 pdm09).
These features strengthen the need for better vaccine coverage and for a rapid
use of antiviral treatment among the population at risk and the need to maintain
the severe cases surveillance.
