Flu Outbreak Cancels Forman School Classes

School To Remain Closed Through Tuesday

According to a letter from the school's administrator, a third of the school's students have contracted a strain of the flu virus. The letter said that another third are sick with either pre-viral, post-viral or a cold, and that the other third are healthy.
The letter states that under the advice of a health center, it had decided to remain closed through Tuesday.
The school said that the virus has put a strain on the school's health center and that it wants to isolate the sick students from the healthy ones.

Students who are unable to go home will receive excellent attention from our Student Health Center. With fewer students on campus, we can devote ourselves to providing the best experience for those students who remain. Those who are healthy but cannot find travel accommodations will be provided with a wealth of on-campus activities.
Classes will resume Wednesday, Feb. 4. Any questions should be directed to the Dean of Students' office at (860) 567-1849.

Forman School in Litchfield is closed until Feb. 11 because of flu.





Students at the exclusive Forman School in Litchfield have come down with the flu and officials have canceled class. Because of a second wave, the school will remain closed until next Feb. 11.
The boarding school students started getting sick the week of Jan. 31. The school was supposed to open this week, but the school decided to remain closed for an additional five days.
"Symptoms are enough to take you out of class and put you out for one, two, three or four days," said Dr. Michael Teiger, a pulmonologist of Hartford.
Samples taken from students were sent to the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. Doctors there determined the strain of flu that's sickened the students is highly contagious and resistant to this flu season's vaccines.
"Every year the Centers for Disease Control tried to second guess what the virus will be out this year. Sometimes they get it right, sometimes they get it wrong," said Dr. Teiger.
Last week, the school had several cases of influenza that was confirmed by a laboratory, so school administrators decided to close for four days. The school is seeing a second wave of cases involving the faculty and students who are now at home.
The state Department of Health and the Torrington Area Health District recommended that the school extend the closure.

The Forman School regretfully announces that we will be closed for seven more days due to an outbreak of Influenza B, more commonly known as ?the flu." We will reopen on Tuesday, Feb. 10 with classes resuming on Wednesday, Feb. 11. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused to our students, families and faculty.
Last week the school had a number of cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza. In an effort to interrupt the spread and prevent further cases, the school decided to close for 4 days. We made this decision based on input from our health center and school physician. The CT Department of Health and the Torrington Area Health District confirmed that we were taking the proper cautionary steps.
We are currently seeing a second wave of cases involving the faculty and students who are now at home. We have decided to extend the time we are closed and postponing Family Weekend. We made this decision after consulting with the CT Department of Health and the Torrington Area Health District. They strongly recommended we take this action. We were in agreement that this was in the best interest of our students, faculty, staff, and families.
Students who were unable to travel due to illness or logistical difficulties were hosted on campus. With reduced numbers we were able to provide greater attention and support for these students. We anticipate that all students will have departed from campus by tomorrow evening. No student who demonstrated any flu like symptoms was allowed to use public transportation and our Health and Dean?s offices coordinated all travel plans to minimize exposure.
The school has been diligent about the cleaning and disinfecting of all public spaces and has put in place a protocol for students returning to make sure personal spaces are adequately cleaned and disinfected.
Forman School has postponed the Winter Musical, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, until Feb. 26 and 27. We have postponed our Family Weekend until April 17 and 18.
About the Flu
The flu can cause mild to severe illness. Influenza is spread person to person through respiratory droplets of coughs and sneezes. Healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning one ?two days before symptoms and up to five days after becoming sick.
To prevent the spread of the flu practice the following:
  • Get a yearly flu vaccine (It is not too late to get the flu vaccination).
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people (social distancing).
  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing (sneeze into your sleeve).
  • Wash your hands frequently (or use Purel, or other hand sanitizers).
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth (common ways of picking up flu virus).
  • Stay home from school or work when sick, and do not visit elderly or healthy friends and relatives (be considerate to others).
  • If you do get the flu, antiviral drugs can help make your illness milder (call your dr. as soon as you start to fee sick).
