Coyote Creek Elementary School to Re-Open WEDNESDAY, MAY 6th

County Health Department no longer advising schools to close due to H1N1 virus

The Contra Costa County Department of Public Health has advised the San Ramon Valley Unified School District to re-open Coyote Creek Elementary School on Wednesday, May 6th. The recommendation comes after the original advisement by health department officials to close the school for seven days. Based on new recommendations from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Contra Costa County Health Department is no longer advising schools to close due to the H1N1 virus.

The District dispatched a sanitizing crew to Coyote Creek on Monday and Tuesday to spend two full days sanitizing and disinfecting the school following the school?s closure due to two ?probable? cases of the H1N1 influenza virus.

?We can?t wait to welcome back all of our students and staff members several days earlier than expected,? said Marsha Tokuyoshi, principal at Coyote Creek Elementary. ?Obviously, we will still remain vigilant regarding students who may feel ill, but we are excited to get back to the business of teaching and learning.?

The CDC has indicated that most US cases are not severe and are similar to the seasonal flu we see in the wintertime. While Contra Costa Health Services will continue to closely monitor the situation, we have been advised by Contra Costa Health Services that all schools may remain open and any schools that were closed can re-open. Students who are not sick can safely come to school.

The County Health Department is advising all individuals who are sick with influenza-like illness to stay home for at least 7 days, even if they feel better earlier. Those who have symptoms for more than 7 days should have no fever for 24 hours before returning to school.

Here was the previous closure notice from Friday.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you most likely have heard, about 10 minutes after my monthly message was sent out where I mentioned that we had no known cases of H1N1 (Swine) flu, I received a call from the County Health Department informing me that we did have one case at Coyote Creek Elementary School . (I?m trying to believe that my message did not jinx us!) Since we received that message we have received word of another student, also from Coyote Creek who has tested ?presumed positive? for the same virus. Both of the students are in the third grade and have no siblings at other schools. Because of this information Coyote Creek School will be closed for at least one week. It is the only school scheduled to be closed at this time.

For the families of Coyote Creek I know that this is a tremendous inconvenience at the very minimum, and certainly a worry to some degree. In addition to the school, the daycare facility will also be closed for at least one week. The CDC has made clear that siblings of students from closed schools, who attend other schools, can go to their school, provided no one in their family has flu like symptoms. CDC has also indicated that parents of students from a closed school are free to go to work, again, provided no one in the family is showing signs of illness.

During the time that Coyote Creek Elementary School is closed, our custodial crews will be sanitizing the interior of the school. This process will take at least two days. After the school is deemed "clean," staff members may begin working back in the school, but children are not to return until the County Health Department has given us permission to start school again.

I am very aware that there is discussion in the public and in the media about whether the H1N1 virus is serious enough to warrant such drastic action. While I might even share in some of these questions, the reality is that when it comes to the health of our children and staff we always err on the side of caution, and in situations like this potential pandemic, we will certainly defer to the direction of the County Department of Health and the CDC.

Thank you for your understanding and support. We will continue to update our district website with new information as it becomes available to us.

Sincerely,

Steven Enoch

Superintendent of Schools
