CofC president Andrew Hsu said a majority of those cases are no longer infectious but encouraged students to get vaccinated, practice good hygiene and monitor their health to help stop the spread of new cases.

“While these new positive cases are not unexpected, my administration and I continue to take this public health threat extremely seriously,” he said. “Based on what we’ve learned from health officials and from past outbreaks in other communities, additional cases are likely and prevention measures are needed to stop the spread of mumps.”

The College remains on its normal operating schedule and there are no plans to alter class/activity schedules or close campus due to the ongoing outbreak. ..

Two confirmed cases of the mumps were reported recently in Kiawah Island, the state Department of Health and Environmental Control said Friday.

It’s a sign the disease, which first noticeably began as an outbreak at the College of Charleston, is apparently spreading to other parts of the Palmetto State.
