First dengue case alarms

Dengue fever has reached Samoa.
This was confirmed yesterday by the Director General of the Ministry of Health, Leausa Dr. Toleafoa Take Naseri.
He told the Weekend Observer that a man presented dengue symptoms last Wednesday, which have since been confirmed through the result of two tests. He said the man, an expatriate who works at a mission, was in Fiji three to four weeks ago before returning to Samoa.
?There was a positive dengue test, an IgM antibody test,? Leausa said.
?Also the rapid test was positive. But we are resending the specimen to New Zealand for reconfirmation. So it?s confirmed, but we still need reconfirming.?
He said the reconfirmation test in New Zealand will also reveal the strain this patient, the index case, has.
